Master's Blog - MAY 2018

From the Master Professor Gillian Davies DL

18-20 MAY 2018

The Master's Away Weekend this year took place from 18 - 20 May 2018 in North Wales at Portmeirion Village, in Gwynedd, not far from my home at Abersoch. A full report on the events of the weekend may be found under "News". We were incredibly lucky to have perfect summer weather which enabled the many Liverymen and their companions who had travelled from South Wales to really appreciate the landscapes surrounding the Dwyryd and Glaslyn river estuaries, where Portmeirion and Plas Brondanw (the home of Clough Williams-Ellis the architect of Portmeirion which we visited on Saturday) and the Lleyn Peninsula at their very best.

Portmeirion is a place close to my heart - it was where my family regularly celebrated birthdays and special occasions -- and I was delighted to be able to welcome Liverymen to this special and magical venue where we enjoyed wonderful hospitality and beautiful surroundings.

On Sunday, we gathered for an early lunch in Criccieth at a restaurant located in another Clough Williams-Ellis building before venturing deeper into Lleyn for the Garden Party most generously hosted by Liveryman Mrs Bettina Harden and her husband David at their home Nanhoron near Pwllheli. The estate has been in the same family for 700 years. The present mansion was designed by Joseph Bromfield of Shrewsbury in 1797 and is surrounded by a park, beautiful walled gardens and a Woodland Walk which is seen at its best at this time of year with a riot of colour from azaleas and rhododendrons set among a sea of bluebells.

I am extremely grateful to Mr and Mrs Harden for opening their house and gardens for what was a wonderful party and a most successful fundraising event. The raffle tickets were snapped up on the day and previously among local friends and those unable to be present and the auction also proved a success. I am awaiting the very final figure but we raised around £5000 for the Silver Jubilee Fund during the weekend.

Saturday, 16 June 2018 - Summer Garden Party by kind invitation of Liveryman Mr DWC Morgan OBE, FIBC, DL, Chairman of the Trustees of WLCOW, and his wife Anne at their home ‘Erw Graig’, Merthyr Mawr near Bridgend. The Calling Notice has been circulated and the Guest of Honour will be Alun Cairns, UK Secretary of State for Wales.
Wednesday, 4 July 2018 –
Silver Jubilee Anniversary Concert with Ensemble Cymru, followed by a reception at Y Senedd, Cardiff, kindly sponsored by AM Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport in the Welsh Government.
